Toast House Café
Toast House Café
Brief: A campus café that provides a comfortable and inviting space for students and faculty to enjoy high-quality coffee and light fare while fostering a sense of community.
Location: The location for my cafe is The Toast House which is a building on the Huddersfiled University Campus. Also known as the ‘Sovereign Design House’, the space was originally the Broadbent bathhouse where foundry workers washed but it shut down in the 1980’s to reopen as a place for people to dine in. I feel that the location of the building was perfect for a café as its central location makes it easy for not just users of the university, but any one driving past.
Concept Collage: I find constructing concept collages the most effective way for me to work in the early stages of a design project. This one was done using Photoshop, taking images and cropping or adjusting them in a way that is visually appealing, and represents the aesthetic I was aiming to achieve. I took various textures of an earthy colour palette and layered them to form a collage.
Sketches: Pencil sketches of spaces I initially knew I wanted to included within the design, which have been adapted in the final model. These were ideas I sketched to visual what I intended to create and could build on.
Sketch Up Modelling: I built up the Floor Plan of the Toast House on Sketch-up, extruding the walls a measuring the window and seating placement. I have used sketch-up many times now and it has become my favourite software for 3D digital modelling. I created the tiling and seating areas myself using the tools and imported other furnishings from the 3D warehouse, like the computers and coffee machines. I added colour and texture to finalise the model, along with some 3D text as wall signage.

Technical Drawings
Sample Board: I put together a physical sample board as a cross over with my material innovations project, exploring different textures and finishes. I ordered a variety of samples from different sites with some being unsuccessful in the final board, playing with different compositions until I created an outcome I was happy with. I tried to achieve a good mix of materials with the stand out flooring as a terrazzo tile, following the scheme of an earthy toned interior.
