Cultures of Hub
Cultures of Hub
The Brief: Design a flexible and adaptable ‘furnitecture’ piece that serves as a welcoming hub for community engagement by the Cultures of Team.
The Location: The Design will be located just outside of Huddersfield Train Station. This serves as an ideal spot within the heart of the community to encourage people leaving and entering Huddersfield to engage.
Research Informing my Design: I did in depth research on different factors that could possible influence my design and help me find an interesting concept. I based it of existing patterns in nature and existing work inspired by nature. Starting with a list of keywords helped guide my research and gave me a strong starting point for this project.
Inspired by a close up, zooming in on just 3 plant cells to explore the idea of layering and repeat patterns. Making this with cardboard helped me discover how depth can add more functionality.
3D model making
Inspired by the movement of leaves within nature and their path as they fall. Looking at their natural arches encouraged me to use them as seating and explore the ‘netting’ concept.
Inspired by the pattern of a plant cell visible from under a microscope. Using cardboard and paper to demonstrate the softness nature encourages, determining the curves and smoother shapes.
Technical Drawings
AutoCAD: I produce my technical drawings using AutoCAD where I can attach the correct dimensions and adjust the line weight to enhance the elevations and plans of my designs. As this had more complicated elevations, I deconstructed the furnitecture design and dimensioned the individual pieces for a clearer understanding. The hatching within the drawings indicates signage.
Material Considerations: When choosing the materiality for the project, I focused heavily on the outdoor location and did my research into suitable materials that would withstand the external elements and be durable enough for the purpose.
